13 Nov 2009

The New Zealand Sports Journalists Association Inc has announced the finalists for the 2009 Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards sponsored by SPARC.

More than 220 entries were received across the 13 categories. One of the category winners will go on to take the Supreme SPARC Sports Journalist of the Year title plus a cash prize of $2,000.

The winners will be announced at the TP McLean Awards Dinner at the Spencer on Byron Hotel in Auckland on Friday, December 04.

Five previous supreme award winners are among this year’s finalists – Dylan Cleaver ( Herald on Sunday), Andrew Cornaga ( Photosport), Wynne Gray (New Zealand Herald), Marc Hinton ( Fairfax Media) and Phil Reid ( Dominion Post).

A new category introduced for the first time in 2009 is the SPARC/NZSJA Sports Journalism Scholarship which provides two young journalists a $1,000 cash prize plus a week in Wellington and Auckland, spending time with key sports leaders and organisations to gain a wider understanding of sports governance in New Zealand.
