NZ Coaching Strategy

Coach at swimming pool. The quality of our coaching is what will allow us to compete internationally against nations with far more funding and far greater numbers participating in sport than in New Zealand.

After extensive consultation with the sector, the New Zealand Coaching Strategy ('Taking Coaching into the Future') was launched in February 2005.

The strategy defines future directions for coaching in New Zealand.

Toward a world-class coaching environment

The New Zealand Coaching Strategy commits to creating a world-class coaching environment in New Zealand, with a common purpose and inter-connected parts.

This environment will deliver significant coaching benefits to all athletes - regardless of age, race, status or location.

The strategy aims to ensure key people in coaching work more collaboratively for athletes' benefit. This will complement the efforts of New Zealand's many committed coaches and successful coaching programmes.

Key objectives of the strategy

The strategy has three key objectives:

  1. More time - Increase the quality and quantity of time coaches have for coaching acitivities and coach education.
  2. More recognition and status - Recognition and status will ensure coaches are valued and coaching is seen as a rewarding experience.
  3. Better quality - Continually improve the quality of coach education and ensure ongoing pathways for development.
