SPARC Releases Melbourne 2006

14 Jul 2006

SPARC (Sport & Recreation New Zealand) today released the findings of Melbourne 2006, an analysis of the performance of the New Zealand team at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Melbourne 2006 provides a review of the programmes and systems that supported New Zealand’s elite athletes in the run-up to the Games, with an eye toward giving those athletes the best possible chance to succeed in future competitions.

"In reviewing the results of the Melbourne Games with each of the sports that competed, one of the consistent themes that emerged is that if New Zealand is to compete and win on the world stage, it needs to increase the depth of talent," said SPARC Chief Executive Nick Hill. "To accomplish that SPARC will focus its resources on sports that can win medals to foster a professional culture for the long term."

In addition to an analysis of the Melbourne Games, Melbourne 2006 includes a series of recommendations designed to help New Zealand sports and teams succeed in future major events.
