FAQs (for RSTs, NGOs, academics) - NZSPAS 07/08
1. What questionnaire is being used?
The questionnaire is based on the previous New Zealand Sport and Physical Activity Surveys and includes questions that have been tested and validated in the New Zealand population.
SPARC and the Ministry of Health worked collaboratively to develop the questions used to measure physical activity in both the NZSPAS and the New Zealand Health Survey conducted by the Ministry of Health.
The New Zealand Health Survey asks about physical activity in the last 7 days, while the NZSPAS also includes intensity, duration and type of activity over the last 7 days.
You can find out more about the New Zealand Health Survey on the Ministry of Health website.
2. Has there been expert advice in developing the questionnaire and the research methodology?
Yes. The Research Team at SPARC coordinated a working group of experts to oversee the questionnaire and the sample design.
This group also gathered professional advice from leading sport and physical activity researchers and key sport, recreation and physical activity stakeholders.
SPARC also sought advice from other experts when required - such as statisticians, to help SPARC develop the overall sampling design, to ensure our sample is robust and represents the New Zealand population.
Prior to the main fieldwork, extensive pre-testing and piloting of the questionnaire and methodology was undertaken by Nielsen.
3. What information will this provide to regional sports trusts?
The 17 regional sports trusts will each receive a report for their area from the NZSPAS 2007/08.
To provide each region with data, we are aiming for 200 interviews in each RST area (with the exception of Eastland, where 100 interviews are expected).
4. What information will be made available?
The NZSPAS results will be made available as a web-based resource in this area of our website.
Details of the reporting formats have yet to be finalised but every effort will be made to ensure that reports are designed in a way that meet key stakeholder requirements.
Reports will be available on a wide range of key indicators and will be provided separately by regional sports trust and for priority groups.
