Final report Dispute Resolution in sport and Recreation Sector - 20 May 2009

SPARC commissioned a review on Dispute Resolution in the Sport and Recreation sector in January 2009. The review covered:

  • current dispute resolution needs of the sector;
  • the extent to which athletes and other persons are informed about dispute resolution rights and procedures within the sector, including the role of the Tribunal;
  • whether adequate use was being made of the Sports Tribunal; and
  • whether the Tribunal was fulfilling its original policy intent.

The review was completed in May 2009. The overall results of the review were positive and concluded that sports organisations have generally improved their practices in relation to dispute resolution and prevention, that good use was being made of the Sports Tribunal as a dispute resolution service, and that the Sports Tribunal was successfully meeting its original policy intent.

The review identified two opportunities for improvement, namely:

  • improving affordability for parties accessing the Tribunal; and
  • improving education in the sports sector about disputes and the role of the Tribunal.

SPARC is working with the Sports Tribunal to address these issues.

High Performance Sports Officials Survey Report

SPARC engaged PS Services to carry out a research project looking at the types and levels of demands faced by high performance (international) sports officials, and the types of support available to them.

The research involved an initial focus group of eight international officials from a range of sports, a self-completion survey posted to 222 officials and another to 41 national sports organisations - with a more in-depth look at three sports through mini case studies.

The report on this research has been divided into the five sections below to make it easier to download:
