Prime Minister’s Coach Scholarships awarded

22 Dec 2006

Sport and Recreation Minister Trevor Mallard today announced the allocation of 23 Prime Minister's High Performance Coach Scholarships to Auckland coaches.

They are part of a larger group of 79 recipients throughout New Zealand to receive a scholarship to support New Zealand’s top coaches.

"These scholarships give coaches the opportunity to gain the knowledge and experience needed to inspire and develop our top athletes," said Trevor Mallard.

"Sport and Recreation New Zealand’s (SPARC’s) high performance strategy identified coach development as an area that needed improvement and the government is committed to ensuring that this happens."

"Sport plays a fundamental role in our national identity. By investing in our coaches as well as our athletes we are recognising that behind every great athlete is a great coach. This is a smart way to enhance our top athletes of tomorrow."

Auckland's Scott Talbot, recipient of a $50,000 Prime Minister’s Coach Scholarship and elite senior swimming coach, is using the scholarship to spend time with coaches from the United States, Europe and Australia and is also aiming to undertake a post graduate diploma in physiology.

Talbot said this will be a fantastic opportunity to spend time with international coaches and learn from them. It will help him to develop his skills, and by sharing knowledge, it will help lift the standard of coaching within New Zealand.

The government has committed up to $785,000 for the 2007 Prime Minister’s Coach Scholarship programme, which is administered by SPARC.
