Overview

SPARC provides a platform for planning to create activity-friendly environments (AFEs).

Activity-friendly environments make activity - such as walking, cycling to work or school, or taking the stairs - the easy choice.

Research shows that 840,000 New Zealand adults are sedentary and that environments are obstacles to action.

Below you can find out about:

The activity-friendly environment planning platform provides a framework and information for planners, urban/transport/environmental designers and public health promoters who want to reduce the barriers to activity in their environments and increase opportunities for being active in normal daily life.

Examples of activity-friendly environments in New Zealand

Increasing interest in activity-friendly environments has seen communities incorporate elements of activity friendliness into design.

Other examples include Whitby in Porirua, new developments in Cromwell and planned townships such as Rolleston.

Most intervention strategies that have been used to date focus on a specific topic, such as the Cycle Strategy for Hauraki District Council or a Walkways Strategy for the Waipa District.
