Success stories

Sport Waikato won the inaugural SPARC Award for outstanding achievement by a regional sports trust.

Project Energize

Project Energize is a ground-breaking initiative that seeks to demonstrate the impact of a major physical activity and nutrition programme within a school setting. The intervention, costing $2.3m over two years, involves a collaboration of major health, sport, education and community organisations, 126 schools and 12,000 young people. It highlights the commitment of the Waikato region to making a difference and involves a robust research dimension to measure the impact of the intervention.

The award recognises both the role Sport Waikato has played in the design of the project and the role the trust will play over two years managing Project Energize. It also acknowledges the role of partner organisations like the Waikato District Health Board as the principal funder, Environment Waikato, University of Waikato, Wintec and Maori and Pacific health providers.

Project Energize sets a new standard by signalling what can be achieved when a regional sports trust operates with the confidence of its community and when it has the imagination to be a genuine pioneer.
