He Oranga Poutama: Stairway to wellbeing

He Oranga Poutama is a SPARC-led initiative that supports Māori well-being through sport and recreation.

He Oranga Poutama is evolving to strongly focus on participating and leading as Māori in sport and traditional physical recreation at community level.

From 1 October 2009, He Oranga Poutama will have a particular emphasis on:

  • Kaiwhakahaere participating as leaders in their community
  • Increased opportunities for whānau to explore, learn and participate as Māori in sport and traditional physical recreation
  • Revitalisation and further development of sport and traditional physical recreation.
Investment

HOP investment is intended to strongly centre on Māori cultural distinctiveness, and support community leadership and participation growth in sport and recreation as Māori. Traditional physical recreation is also a focus.

SPARC invests in community organisations such as Iwi authorities, Māori organisations and Regional Sports Trusts.

Through the programme's open and contestable applications process, 12 organisations have been successful in gaining investment through 2012.
