Wellington City Council - Talent Development Programme

Project examples – successful applicants

The programme has recently been through its first cycle of application and grants. The applications were received in October 2007 and by Christmas 2007 the successful applicants had been informed.

Of the six successful organisations, there were three regional organisations and three national organisations:
  • Netball Wellington Region
  • Swimming New Zealand
  • Triathlon New Zealand
  • Wellington High Performance Aquatics – Diving (this is a regional organisation, supported by Wellington Airport/Infratil)
  • Wellington Hockey Association
  • Yachting New Zealand.
The application from Yachting New Zealand (YNZ) is one example of the kind of investment the programme seeks to make. The application comes from a regional sporting organisation, through the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club (RPNYC), and has been supported dollar for dollar by YNZ.

YNZ is looking at using the WCC programme as a pilot for setting up Regional Performance Centres and to use the WCC programme as a benchmark to ascertain how effective these regional performance centres will be. The components of the programme are based on the holistic development of the athlete.

This level of specification is typical in successful applications.
