Wellington City Council - Talent Development Programme
Local government involvement in high performance development
It is unusual for a local territorial authority to be involved in a partnership around talent development with a regional sports organisation. Wellington City Council supports the programme for several reasons:
- Council recognise that sport and recreation contribute to social wellbeing and the delivery of wider community outcomes. Given the role of sport as an avenue through which individuals connect within any community, there is plenty of scope to make an impact through sport and recreation
- Council also has a strong focus on engaging with young people. This focus extends to recognition of the wider benefits for young people that come from investment in talent development. While the programme is not exclusively focused on young people, in practice, developing a strong culture around sports talent development means working with many young people, providing role models, and access to pathways to high achievement
- the pride local communities have in their region often includes pride in the sports people representing Wellington and New Zealand. The programme partners aim to have a proportion of athletes that is greater than, or at least matches, Wellington’s population size.
