Way2Go – enabling active choices in Nelson/Tasman: Good practice

Connecting with communities and building the brand.

Way2Go has been successful in connecting with the community. A measure of this success is that other organisations are interested in hooking in to the Way2Go network. For example, Nelson Rotary has a programme called “Replay”, where they fix up recycled sports equipment and loan it out to the community. They are keen to link this programme with Way2Go’s network of regional hubs.

Neighbourhood hubs

The neighbourhood hubs are key to the operational side of Way2Go.
There are currently seven hubs based in Richmond, Nelson (Victory), Motueka, Moutere Hills, Golden Bay, Murchison, and most recently in Nelson central. The Way2Go website has links to each hub, where residents can find out what opportunities for physical activity are going on in their area.

The Nelson Tasman District covers a broad area, and includes a range of communities of varying socio-economic character, to remote rural areas and towns. Each hub has its own coordinator and delivers services that are pitched and relevant to their particular community.

Programmes such as Baby and Buggy and Ease into Activity, have toolkits that enable hub coordinators to support volunteers in delivering the programme in their community. The toolkit ensures consistent messages and covers health & safety issues. The hub coordinators are supported in developing the programmes in their area by Way2Go Regional Advisor, Glenis Bell, who is based at the Tasman Recreation Resource Centre in Richmond. Glenis is thrilled with the community response and the performance and achievements of the Way2Go hub coordinators, most of whom do untold volunteer hours (as is the norm for part-timers) and their passion and commitment is outstanding. But with each coordinator on limited hours and resourcing, their workload needs to be carefully managed.
