Way2Go – enabling active choices in Nelson/Tasman: Project impact and legacy

Project impact and legacy

Partnership and regional cooperation

There is a stronger mutual understanding and better cooperation between the participating organisations as a result of the collaborative process developed through Way2Go. Through working together on Way2Go initiatives, the partners have learned more about each others’ work, resulting in positive relationship building at the project level and beyond.

Mike Tasman-Jones, Recreation and Sport Advisor at Tasman District Council explains, “We have sat down with each other and gone about understanding how each others’ business fits together. For example, ‘how does nutrition fit in with the Action Expo?’ The result on the day of the Action Expo was that the DHB Public Health team was involved in cooking and providing healthy food options and healthy messages for the event. Beyond this, the partners have developed a stronger understanding of each others’ business and how we can collaborate”.

Getting people active

The impact and legacy of the project so far has been ‘huge’, it has made an impact on the community in terms of its objectives around making active choices accessible. Some of the indicators of this success include:

  • An evaluation of the Ease into Activity programmes showed that 73% of people involved had increased their regular physical activity following use of a pedometer
  • ASB Aquatic Centre 3rd birthday and the WAY2GO Action Expo 2007: 1,500 people attended; 160 Passport to Leisure cards completed i.e. 160 people ‘had-a-go’ at 6 activities each
  • In Your Neighbourhood is getting families out into their local parks for ‘old fashioned’ fundamental fun and games
  • The Way2Go website is being used by health programmes to guide people into an activity e.g. GRx team, Practice nurses, Be Well nurses, Maori health providers etc and it is also a tool for the community to use, informing people of options and locations, making it easy to be active
  • Maps have been developed (for Richmond and Motueka so far) showing walkways & cycle-ways, which includes all the ‘shortcuts” (linkages), so that walking to destinations is seen as the easy option.
