Waitakere - A case study in relationship building
What is unique about this Partnership Agreement?
Both organisations had limited experience of putting together an agreement of this kind. It was a learning process for both partners and an exercise in constructive communication and organisational openness.
The agreement covers typical areas of a funder/provider arrangement, but it has a different flavour. Developing and maintaining guiding principles that formalise the work they do is central to the document. In practical terms this means aligning organisational outcomes and integrating the partnership into work plans of staff in both organisations. Some areas that are not typical, for example, are the alignment of organisational outcomes and the integration of the partnership requirements into the work plans of staff in both organisations .
The key areas of the agreement are as follows:
- Reasons for the partnerships
- The key Community Outcomes that directly influence Sport Waitakere and WCC’s Leisure Services. These areas include healthy lifestyles, strong communities and working together.
- A requirement to build organisational collaboration into the work plans of staff in both organisations.
- Building and maintaining the relationship, including both organisations having ’relationship leaders’, who take responsibility for keeping the engagement process on track.
- Evaluation and performance of not only shared work programmes, but also effectiveness of the partnering agreement.
- Statement of mutual responsibilities.
- Standard terms of agreement around finance payments.
- Mutual recognition of Key Partner status.
