Sports House in the Taranaki – a model for regional sporting development

About Sports House

Sports House is a purpose-designed sports hub, administration and equipment storage facility located within the precincts of Yarrow Stadium. As well as being the base for Sport Taranaki, it is home to seven regional sports organisations:
  • Taranaki Bowls
  • Taranaki Cricket Association
  • Taranaki Rugby League
  • Central Soccer
  • Netball Taranaki
  • Basketball Devon Dynamoes
  • Waka Ama
Yarrow Stadium itself is a multisport facility in which Sports House functions as a hub. A multisport facility means that a range of different Taranaki provincial sports are played at the stadium, including soccer, rugby union and rugby league. Different parts of the stadium and surrounding fields are allocated to these sporting codes.

Sports House was designed as an open plan office space to house a minimum of 50 sports administration staff from Sport Taranaki and the RSOs. The open plan scheme was a conscious decision to help create a sense of community and build awareness and dialogue between the various sporting organisations.

The open plan design is supported by a range of five meeting facilities, communication rooms for private phone calls, quiet areas, catering facilities, a board room and decks overlooking the stadium.

There is also a sports equipment library, which many community or sporting organisations utilise and which currently services 182 members, including schools, scouts and sports clubs.
