Northland - Steps toward regional collaboration
New collaborations
The successful collaboration through PANT has served as a platform on which regional projects and collaboration have expanded, including the Northland Sport and Physical Activity Strategy (NSPAS), the entry of Sport Northland into the Northland Intersectoral Forum, and the Taitamariki Tuu Ora programme.
Northland Sport and Physical Activity Strategy (NSPAS)
Since its inception, NSPAS has been instrumental in achieving funding for a range of projects (including the continuation of 10,000 Steps Northland). These successes have occurred due to the collaborative approach, increasing the confidence of funding organisations that the projects will achieve the desired outcomes.
Implementation of the strategy began in early 2007 and a number of exciting projects have resulted. Examples of these include:
- Community Hub - a community development project, working with rural and isolated communities that aims to increase community capacity with regard to physical activity
- Northland Regional Sports Facilities Plan - the purpose of the plan is to provide a co-ordinating strategy which will ensure the most effective use of available capital funds in meeting identified needs for regional facilities, and avoid duplication of facilities. The project will develop a plan for the Northland region that details all existing and future regional sports facilities
- regional sport and physical activity website – designed to further improve information accessibility and collaboration for both providers and the community (www.activenorthland.co.nz will be active later in 2008)
- another unplanned outcome has been the contribution by local government to expanding walking infrastructure
- Taitamariki Tuu Ora.
The partners in NSPAS include a wide range of organisations, such as local councils, including the Northland Regional Council (who have come on board to partner in sport and recreation for the first time) and Northland District Health Board, their partner organisation Tai Tokerau MAPO.
While the partners in NSPAS are already committed to their own significant initiatives designed to increase the level of physical activity in Northland, having a regional strategy provides a platform for the co-ordination of ideas and resources as well as identifying regional opportunities and gaps.
