ARPASS

What are the strategy goals and projects?

The Strategy has four main goals delivered through a series of diverse projects:

GOAL 1: REGIONAL COLLABORATION: Stronger collaboration between the strategy partners.

Projects (examples):

A review of all Long-term Community Council Plans (LTCCPs) was commissioned to identify potential cross boundary projects.

Formation of a Regional Collaboration Team that focuses on cross-boundary projects managed by councils and Regional Sports Trust (RSTs).

Formation of a Strategic Partners Group where each strategy partner has a political or governance representative that overseas the strategy implementation.

GOAL 2: PARTICIPATION: Implementation of regional initiatives aimed at higher levels of community participation in sport and physical activity.

Projects (examples):

GIS Mapping Project

The purpose of this project was to gather demographic information about communities with low levels of physical activity. Existing information has been reviewed and 2006 census data included. The results to date have been circulated to all strategy partners. ARPASS has commissioned work in these communities to collate further community profile information and make recommendations on potential projects and collaborations between participating agencies.

C’mon GT^ (www.getup.co.nz)

In order to connect with young people and increase levels of physical activity among this group ARPASS developed a specific youth campaign.

C’mon GT^ engaged 13 to 18 year olds in a physical activity campaign, utilising text and web-based technology. C’mon GT^ was based around an inter-school competition where students participated by being physically active to gain points in the form of a unique game card. Student activity points contributed to their school’s combined points with the campaign seeking to find Auckland’s most active secondary school. Through the website, students were able to form small groups of up to 10 players and effectively compete against each other.

C’mon GT^ was implemented through 2007, and 33 secondary schools signed on within the region. Initial responses show that the C’mon GT^ campaign achieved 132,595 episodes of activity (30 minutes or more), which equates to approximately 15 hours of activity per participating student over the 10-week period.

The success of the campaign is also indicated by the behavioral changes recorded over the 10 weeks from its beginning to end, including:

  • increased importance of physical activity/sport in student lives
  • an increase in competitive behavior and physical activity/sport carried out in parks and sports fields
  •  in a seven-day period, an increase in frequency: five-times/week physical activity/sport (heart rate up)
  • an increase in weekly 31-40 minute intensity
  • an increase in weekly team/group physical activity/sport
  • an increase in weekly, 60 minutes per day physical activity/sport
  • a 20 percent increase in physical activity as the mode to get to and from school with corresponding increase in time taken to get to school.
www.PlayDay.org.nz

PlayDay is a free website providing simple, searchable access to all the available information on physical activity and sports in the Auckland region.

The data combines all council and RST databases in one place.

The PlayDay regional website and database continues to develop with constant hits and return visitors. A radio marketing campaign has increased hits and registrations of activity organisations and events by a third.
