Mythbusting: What the regional data says

Myth busting

Thanks to this approach to gathering regional data, both Sport Canterbury and Sport Hawkes Bay have been able to bust some myths about sport and participation in their regions.

Some examples in Canterbury include:

  • Total participation over the last five years has remained relatively level, there has been no significant decrease in participation
  • Participation is up across a range of codes over the last five years, including soccer, cricket, basketball, volleyball, tennis and others
  • Coach quality has rated an average of 3.7 points on a 5-point scale across all RSOs in Canterbury.

Examples in the Hawke’s Bay region include:

  • Participation is increasing in a majority of sports in the Hawke’s Bay region
  • Overall participation in organised sport (in all codes where data was collected) has been increasing
  • There is a general perception of declining participation in athletics in New Zealand. In the Hawke’s Bay, this research has shown that participation in athletics is increasing substantially.
