Mythbusting: What the regional data says
What information has Sport Canterbury been collecting?
At Sport Canterbury, the information was initially gathered from annual reports and by direct contact with the RSOs in order to show trends over several years on:
- the number of affiliated participants in sports
- the performance of each sport in national competitions– for example, podium finishes in swimming.
In recent years, apart from collecting data from annual reports, etc, Sport Canterbury began asking RSOs other specific questions about:
- Financial performance
- Revenue streams
- Number of active coaches
- Coaching qualifications
- Volunteers.
While adding new questions, Sport Canterbury kept the original questions consistent to ensure they are able to show genuine trends by reliably comparing data (i.e. comparing apples with apples).
In future, it is likely that more data will be collected directly from clubs and not just the RSO. Sport Canterbury is also investigating qualitative measures by asking longer open questions about what sporting organisations are thinking and doing – and why.
