Mairangi Bay - Clubs and Council partner up

Introduction

Cooperation between North Shore City Council and three clubs in the city has contributed to more vibrant and successful organisations and helped cluster sport and recreation facilities in the area.

This case study looks at the amalgamation of the Mairangi Bay Women’s and Men’s Bowling Clubs which created the opportunity for the construction of a new beach volleyball facility for the North Harbour Volleyball Association on the site of the former Women’s Bowling Club. North Shore City Council took an active role in supporting both of these initiatives.

North Shore City Council has created the role of Sport and Recreation Advisor for Sector Development and employed Sue Dennehy to help build club partnerships and support innovative developments. North Shore City Council has seen significant population growth since it’s inception in 1989 and must work within the constraints of a very limited supply of land, therefore having clubs sharing facilities is an innovative way of dealing with this growth.

This case study explains how the Council supported the individual Bowling Clubs to develop new and existing facilities to create a more accessible and active community.
