Hutt Valley No Exceptions District Declaration
Awareness is key to change
Public awareness is a vital factor in changing individual and organisational behaviour around disability. This includes public awareness of what disability is, the rights of people with disabilities, the strategies and policies that are out there that focus on disability, or just being used to having people with disabilities in your team, sports club, office, gym etc.
Because awareness is pivotal in changing behaviour, staff training and a plan to communicate what the No Exceptions district is about is crucial.
It is also important to recognise and acknowledge where change is already happening, and where good work is being done. This work can then be put in the context of ‘where we want to go from here’.
Planning and facilitation: Scoping, gap analysis and agreement from partners
Before making public claims to becoming a No Exceptions district or organisation, it is necessary to undertake some planning steps.
Some of these have been outlined above under the discussion about
Key steps to planning and rolling out a No Exceptions initiative. Some of the key elements include: scoping, gap analysis, cost analysis, and an implementation framework.
Not least of all, building agreement amongst potential partners may require co-ordination and facilitation from an organisation or group well placed to ensure a good balance of interests and trust building. In this case, the facilitation role has been taken up by SPARC and Sport Wellington.
