Hutt Valley No Exceptions District Declaration

Strategic fit and gaining agreement to the plan

Having clarified what being part of the No Exceptions district would mean, the next phase was about obtaining internal agreement from each organisation. Key steps entailed:
  • Clarifying links between the No Exception strategy principles and the key strategy documents of the participating organisations. For example, clarifying links between No Exceptions and local government Sports and Recreation strategies, and long term plans (LTCCP).
  • Gaining internal approvals from the participating organisations for agreement around key parts of the plan outlined in the scoping report, including staff training, gap analysis, and the timeframe for implementation of changes. Political buy-in from senior staff was crucial in gaining official approvals. One of the key factors was that some senior people in the partner organisations were familiar with disability issues, and recognised the significant community, social and political benefits from such an initiative.
The launch

To maximise community awareness of the Hutt Valley No Exceptions district, the stakeholders launched the initiative (August 2007) and publicised their commitment to No Exceptions.

The launch was held at Trentham Racecourse and involved representatives from a range of community organisations, local government officials and representatives, the Minister of Recreation and Sport, DHB staff, schools, sports clubs and the media.
