High Performance in the South Island – partnership between the NZAS and local government

High Performance in the South Island – partnership between the NZ Academy of Sport and local government

The New Zealand Academy of Sport South Island (NZAS South Island) is working in partnership with local government to deliver high performance services through an innovative ‘whole of South Island’ approach.

NZAS South Island runs two high performance hubs – in Dunedin, where the head office is located, and the emerging Centre of Excellence for high performance at QEII Park in Christchurch.

Each hub connects high performance sport and the community in a range of ways. Partnerships with local government are key to this, and are driven by mutual recognition of common objectives and benefits for community/city outcomes and high performance sport.

The twin hub approach and NZAS South Island’s partnerships with both cities have positioned high performance sport as strengthening community outcomes, while ensuring a less city-centric approach to meeting regional goals. As well as the hubs in Dunedin and Christchurch, the Academy works with other South Island locations and facility’s such as the ILT Velodrome in Invercargill, the world class snow and ice facilities in Otago, as well as the NZ Cricket Academy at Lincoln University.

This case study looks at these two hubs, what is unique about them, and the various ways in which they are changing the way high performance fits into the community. Specifically, how these partnerships between NZAS South Island and Dunedin and Christchurch City Councils are connecting local authorities, community investment and high profile sport.
