(NEW!) Bike Northland – a success story in cooperation

Introduction

Established in 2007, Bike Northland is a relatively new regional sports organisation bringing together Mountain Biking, BMX and Road Cycling clubs. The aim is to provide a common voice to promote cycling throughout Northland.

Bike Northland was created after one club approached Sport Northland for advice on how to rebuild and grow. Sport Northland ended up bringing various cycle clubs together to work in a cooperative manner towards solving their problems. The outcome was that a new regional body was established.

Through coordinating resources and developing combined strategies and processes, Bike Northland is better placed to partner with a number of key organisations.

For example, when the opportunity to develop Whangarei’s former refuge disposal area at Pohe Island came up, Bike Northland approached Whangarei District Council with a plan to develop the site as a multi-purpose bike facility.

The case study will look at the following:
  • Bike Northland – how they got there
  • The Pohe Island development
  • The Bike Northland proposal to Whangarei District Council
  • 10 key steps to successful engagement of a Council
  • Other learnings.
