What is an AFE?

'Activity-friendly environments allow people to take the active option first. The infrastructure, settings and services of activity-friendly environments allow and encourage people of all ages and abilities to make an active choice.'

Here are a few of the definitions of an activity-friendly environment that are generally accepted world wide:

'Activity-friendly environments allow people to take the active option first. Activity-friendly environment infrastructure, settings and services allow and encourage people of all ages and abilities to make an active choice.'
'Activity-friendly environments - active, friendly, easy.'

Another definition that is gathering favour is from Active Living research. Although this definition makes reference to planned exercise (discretionary, as opposed to daily life), we include it here in the hope that planned exercise will, in the future, become a 'daily-life' component in New Zealanders' lifestyles:

'A place that makes it easy to make the choice to be physically active, through planned exercise or routine daily activity.'

SPARC has also agreed on a definition of physical activity:

'Physical activity can be defined as "movement required on a daily basis to sustain health". Physical activity opportunities include sport, active recreation, physical education, fitness activities, active transport and play.'
