Elements of an AFE

An activity-friendly environment (AFE) has been deliberately planned to make 'the active choice the easy choice' in ordinary day-to-day life.

A successful AFE results from a collaborative effort between local/regional authorities and community and government agencies.

Key elements of an activity-friendly environment are:

  • infrastructure - how spaces and travel routes are managed, including pavement sizes, links between amenities, transport ideas
  • people - the range of people that need to be included in creating an AFE
  • plans - agency and policy issues.

For a full list of elements that can be considered in creating AFEs, read the 'Key Elements' chapter of the Activity-Friendly Environments resource.
