ARPASS

Investing in the Auckland Regional Physical Activity and Sport Strategy (ARPASS)
What is ARPASS?

The Auckland Regional Physical Activity and Sport Strategy (ARPASS) aims for greater participation in physical activity and excellence in sport. To achieve this, ARPASS targets improved coordination between Auckland agencies operating in this sector.

Previously, there has been a gap in the delivery of sport and physical activity at the regional level in Auckland, with limited collaboration across geographical and sector boundaries. Many organisations working in the same communities have planned independently of each other in the past. ARPASS is about developing a regional view and regional co-operation to reduce fragmentation, duplication and inefficiencies.

The Auckland region faces a distinct set of challenges – a growing and diverse population, complex infrastructure, transport complications and health issues. Many sectors are currently grappling to find a co-ordinated regional response to these issues. ARPASS has taken a lead in doing so and has developed models and processes that are evolving as best practice at a national level. Some key examples include the organisational development tool and the community facilities development model which links councils and schools in the development of recreational facilities at schools.

ARPASS is mandated by the partnering regional organisations and Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC). It challenges the partners to work collaboratively and innovatively to respond to regional issues. The strategy recognises that providing better opportunities for people to participate in sport and physical activity will have a big impact on national levels of participation and sporting achievement.
