2006 'TP' Awards
New Zealand's top sports journalists and photographers were recognised at the annual SPARC Sir Terry McLean Sports Journalism Awards in Auckland on 17 November.
Winners

- Peter Montgomery collecting the Sports Journalist of the Year 2006 Award on behalf of Andrew Saville, from Emirates CEO Chris Lethbridge.
The big prize of the night - the Emirates Airline Sports Journalist of the Year Award - went to radio broadcaster Andrew Saville. Saville, 'the voice of rugby', also won the Wilson Sports Radio category.
The SPARC Outstanding Contribution to Sport Through Journalism Award went to former cricket and soccer radio commentator Alan Richards.
Special guests
The Awards attracted around 300 past and present media and sporting celebrities.
Among the special guests were representatives of the three outstanding New Zealand sports teams of 50 years ago:
- John Reid, Sam Guillen, Jack Alabaster and Noel McGregor, members of the first national cricket team to win a Test.
- Tiny White, Kevin Skinner, Pat Walsh, Ross Brown, Dennis Young and Patsy Clarke (wife of the full-back Don Clarke), who scored their first Test series win against the Springboks.
- 1956 Olympians, including Jack Cropp (New Zealand's gold medallist in yachting in Melbourne), Val Young, Don Rowlands, Jean Hurring and Bev Robertson.

- John Wells, Chair of SPARC, presenting Alan Richards with the Outstanding Contribution to Sport through Journalism Award.
Also present were former New Zealand Olympic, Commonwealth and World Championships representatives, including Yvette Williams, Ian Ferguson, Paul Macdonald, Chris White, Mike Stanley, Ralph Roberts, Terry Jarvis, Mark Burgess, Kevin Barry, Stu Wilson, Hedley Howarth, Barry Sinclair, John Sparling, Leslie Egnot, Rod Davis, Geoff Smale and Hal Wagstaff.
These were the 26th NZSJA awards and the 12th under the patronage of SPARC. It is the sixth year they have been known as the Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards.
