ACE

Both developing and elite athletes invest a large amount of time in the pursuit of sporting success.

Athletes have to integrate many aspects of their life to succeed in their sport programme. Many of the aspects outside the training or competition arena impact on their ability to reach their sporting goals.

Black Ferns in action. What is ACE?

The objective of the ACE (Athlete Career and Education) programme is to assist athletes to effectively manage their lives in order to achieve sporting excellence.

How is ACE delivered?

ACE is delivered through structured profiling and planning processes. Twenty-three ACE advisors nationwide provide athletes with individualised services that assist them to create a performance-improving environment.

How can ACE improve my performance?

ACE can assist you with the following areas:

  • Integrating sport and other life goals
  • Life skills, such as decision making, goal setting and time management
  • Employment
  • Financial budgeting
  • Relocation
  • Career
  • Education
  • Public speaking and dealing with the media
  • Retirement
  • Use and the integration of a support network.

How to access ACE services

To have an ACE advisor assigned to you, contact your nearest NZ Academy of Sport regional operation.

ACE advisors generally have a high performance sport background and understand the demands elite athletes face. All ACE advisors must complete an international, industry-recognised qualification to work in the ACE programme. The quality assurance programme and regular professional development opportunities help ensure ACE advisors deliver the most appropriate service to athletes.

Getting started with your ACE advisor

Your ACE advisor will check your national sport organisation's ACE plan and contact your coach to determine what services you are entitled to. You'll meet with your ACE advisor to develop an ACE Performance Profile - this will determine how you can get the most out of the ACE programme. This initial meeting will take about an hour.

Follow-up services after the ACE Performance Profile are completely based on what you need in order to meet your performance goals. Your coach and support team can work with you and your ACE advisor to ensure you get the most out of your sessions.
