Game Plan

'Think active' and you'll find there's a lot you can do. This programme gives you ideas for ways you can get a team game going with your friends, workmates or family - or head off bike riding, walking or jogging.

Team sports

1. Game of touch

You can have as few as six players to make a good game. If you're not sure of the rules, you'll find them on the Touch New Zealand website.

2. Soccer

Everyone can play soccer - all you need is a ball and a bit of space.

3. Force Back

The goal of Force Back is to kick the ball down the field towards the opposition's goal line. A point is scored when the ball bounces over the back line, not if it goes over on the full. If a player catches a kick on the full, his team can advance five paces. Games are played for nine minutes each way, with a minute in the middle for a half-time orange. The first team with three points on the board wins.

4. Backyard or beach cricket

You just need a tennis ball, a bat (or rolled up newspapers) and something for the wickets. Have a bit of fun at lunchtime and get a game going with your workmates out the back.

5. Vortex

You can have freestyle throws in the park with a mate or three, or play a whole game with gridiron rules.

6. Touchdown Rob the Nest

Rules for this game can be found on the Touch New Zealand website.

7. Team Touchdown

Another touch variation. Again, you can check out the rules on the Touch New Zealand website.

8. Speed golf

Head off to the local golf course with mates and run between the shots! This will make the game faster and of course you'll get fitter.

9. Frisbee

Go to the park for some free-form throwing - or you can play touch, substituting the frisbee for a ball.

For you

1. Jog

Try to get a run or a jog in early in the morning (before the family is up) or fit one in at lunchtime.

2. Swim

Dust off your boardies and hit the pool for 20 laps of freestyle. Swimming lengths is great, all-over exercise.

3. Bike

Mountain biking, biking to work, bike riding with the kids - take your pick and do it.

4. Gym

Join up at a gym near work or home, or turn your home into a gym using tins as weights, the stairs as a stepper... think active and you'll find there's a lot you can do around the house.

5. Walk

Turn off the box and take your better half out for an evening walk around the neighbourhood. Keep it brisk and you'll do your body a favour while you get to have a good quality catch-up.
