Roy Scott

In his own words

A very proud Roy Scott recently completed the Green Prescription programme in Mt Roskill, Auckland. As part of celebrating his success, Roy gave a motivational speech that we’ve decided to share with you.

"Last year at the age of 77, I was told by my doctor that I had type 2 diabetes. The doctor said I could control the condition with medication. I joined the Avondale Diabetes Support Group and Diabetes Auckland and attended the 'Healthy Living with Diabetes' course. I was glad I did because it helped me keep my diabetes under control.

"The third two-hour session of the course was named 'Choosing to Live an Active Life’, by Emma Gibbs from Green Prescription. I was very impressed with her talk, especially the documentary that was made at this centre with Ollie as the star.

"I knew this was the place for me, so I joined Green Prescription in October last year. I'm enjoying  myself, meeting a lot of new friends, and I’ve lost 10kgs. That’s one kg per month since I joined. My doctor is very pleased and so am I.

"I look at it this way - I'm the caretaker of my own life and if I don’t look after myself nobody else will. You can be rich or poor but you can’t buy good health. I’m young at heart, but slightly older in other places. Age is in the body not the mind. You can stay younger by eating well, walking  well and living well. Never regret growing old, it's a privilege denied to many. Oh and remember this: Early to bed, early to rise, makes me healthy wealthy and wise, But it is no bloody good if you don’t exercise!!

"And that my friends is how, with the help of my doctor, Green Prescription, ProCare (Primary Health  Organisation) and the main important people here for me, the gym instructors, I have kept my diabetes under control. Thank you all."
