Matthew gets off the couch and heads outdoors
Matthew has always enjoyed outdoor activities such as running, fishing and diving. But as his life became busier, he found himself indoors more and becoming less active. It wasn’t long before Matthew realised he had become a couch potato.
In 2004, Matthew was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. Initially he followed his doctor's advice to adopt a healthy lifestyle, by making changes to his diet and becoming physically active. However, after a few months Matthew hit a low patch, which reduced his motivation to be active.
While awaiting a regular check up at the Heretaunga Health Centre, a Green Prescription display caught Matthew's eye and interest. During his consultation, Practice Nurse Shirley Coles discussed the role of the Green Prescription programme and the benefits that physical activity has on managing blood sugar levels.
Soon after, Matthew met with Honoria Ropiha - a Green Prescription support trainer. He found his Green Prescription provided him with a clear activity plan and goals to achieve. Furthermore, knowing that support was there kept Matthew motivated and helped change his attitude towards physical activity.
Initially, Matthew started walking in the mornings, which was soon followed by a light weights programme. Within three months, he was running at least 5 km several times a week.
Matthew is pleased that his blood sugar levels are now normal. He has more energy for outdoor activities with friends and he loves doing more than watching TV at home.
On a scale of 1-10 Matthew rates his current fitness at 7, and he has set himself a goal to work towards reaching 10. His advice to people like him is to turn off the telly and get active!
