Gayle
Discovering physical activity after 20 years on the couch!
Gayle Theunissen feels like a new person since she received her Green Prescription in October 2003.
After her North Shore GP told Gayle she needed to make changes to her lifestyle to improve her health, she literally 'stepped up to the mark' and is now walking every day for 30 to 40 minutes.
Initially Gayle started at a slower pace, but over time the length and intensity of her walks have increased. Now she can walk further within the same time, which is very satisfying.
Gayle and her husband, Greg, enjoy discovering different walking routes. One day they will walk along the cliff top in Browns Bay; on another day they will do a flat walk along Long Bay beach.
Until now, Gayle never realised how much she enjoyed walking - this is the first time she has done regular exercise in 20 years.
Gayle has noticed many other positive benefits from becoming physically active. She lost 7 kg in 3 months, changed her eating habits, is off HRT and blood pressure medication (her blood pressure has decreased) and is sleeping better.
Gayle's confidence and self-esteem have also improved, and she is keen to stick with her new healthy lifestyle. She may even give swimming a go, to break the monotony!
Because of the encouragement and support provided by Harbour Sport, Gayle has been able to stick with her Green Prescription. Well done, Gayle!
