Volunteers

SPARC would like to say a huge thanks to the half a million New Zealand who do thousands of tough jobs in sport and recreation every week - just for the love of it. There are 41,000 people paid to work in sport in New Zealand, but 500,000 people working unpaid.

Volunteers are incredibly important at every level. Without grassroots helpers, sport simply wouldn’t happen – and players could never advance to world-class level.

The Experiences and Motivations of Sports Volunteers

Volunteers are a valuable resource in the sports sector. While about 41,000 people are paid to work in sport in New Zealand, it is estimated that another 500,000 people work unpaid. Without their hard work and effort at every level, many sports activities and events would not happen.

Finding and Keeping Volunteers

Volunteers make a significant contribution to the sport and recreation sector in New Zealand. The sector is dependent on the unpaid labour of approximately 500,000 volunteers. This means that for every paid person there are eight volunteers.
