Prime Minister's Coach Scholarships
The Prime Minister’s Coach Scholarship programme is managed by SPARC on behalf of the Government. The purpose of the scholarships is to develop skills that contribute to the quality of New Zealand's sport performance at the elite level.
Scholarships are aligned to SPARC’s High Performance Strategy 2006-2012 and must impact SPARC’s high performance mission of 'more New Zealanders winning on the world stage.'
2010 Coach Scholarships
In 2010, approximately 19 PM Coach Scholarships have been awarded. Below is the list of 2010 recipients as at 21 December 2009:
Scholarship Details
A maximum of $50,000 per year is available per scholarship for a maximum of three years. However, the likely maximum investment per application may vary from year to year and is outlined in the Programme Guide (PDF, 248 KB).
Who is eligible to apply?
Any coach who:
- is working with high performance athletes;
- is acknowledged in a NSO’s high performance plan or service plan, or identified by their NSO as an emerging talent who will impact high performance sport within the next five years ;
- has an up-to-date professional development plan;
- has demonstrated commitment to their NSO’s education and development pathways (if available);
- has their application endorsed by their NSO;
- has their application endorsed by their New Zealand Academy of Sport Coach Services Advisor; and
- has met all scholarship requirements if any previous scholarships awarded.
How can the funding be used?
The programme supports professional development activities related to the purpose of the scholarships. By way of example, activities supported can include accreditation requirements, business coaching, mentoring, training, internships, conferences, study visits, observations at key sporting events, discussions on ‘best’ practice, on-the-job shadowing, participation in peer network activities, participation in international committees or working groups, peer review of professional work, travel, accommodation, incidentals and reimbursement for lost income.

How do I apply for a 2010 scholarship?
- Contact your NSO for its eligibility criteria.
- Discuss your application with your NSO and Coach Performance Advisor (if you have one)
- From mid October you may complete your application form online. Before going online to complete your application you can prepare with the draft application form (Word, 62 KB).
- Submit your application before 5pm, 1 December 2009.
Your NSO will be notified in writing on the outcome of your application by 24 December 2009.
Submitting progress reports
Reports from scholarship recipients are due within four weeks of completing of a scholarship.
These should be submitted online at www.highperformancesport.co.nz. Submitting a report at this website will require you to create a free login account.
The website allows greater accessibility to reports and ensures knowledge gained from scholarship recipients is able to be shared across the high performance system.
