Comments sought on draft Sports Anti-Doping Rules
13 Jul 2006
On behalf of Drug Free Sport NZ, SPARC (Sport & Recreation New Zealand) is seeking comments from national sport organisations and athletes on draft Sports Anti-Doping Rules.
Under the Sports Anti-Doping Bill, which is currently before Parliament, Drug Free Sport NZ will be required to issue Sports Anti-Doping Rules.
The Sports Anti-Doping Rules are designed to make it easier for national sport organisations to comply with the World Anti-Doping Code. Instead of having to write their own anti-doping rules, national sport organisations will be able to adopt the Sports Anti-Doping Rules - these will be updated and maintained by Drug Free Sport NZ.
Sports must comply with the Code as a condition of membership in their International Federations and in order to participate at international events such as world championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.
Adoption of the Sports Anti-Doping Rules will not be compulsory. Sports that wish to adopt the anti-doping rules of their International Federations or want to implement their own anti-doping rules may still do so.
The Rules set out the process for testing athletes, results management, and hearings and penalties as required by the Code. Some technical detail, such as the Prohibited List and Testing Standards, is set out in separate documents published by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Comments should be provided to SPARC by 31 July 2006.
