SPARC welcomes Healthy Eating Healthy Action plan

24 Jun 2004

SPARC has welcomed the release of the Health Eating Healthy Action implementation plan by Health Minister Annette King today.

"Poor nutrition and inactivity are not just serious health issues, they also affect our wellbeing as a nation. The Healthy Eating Healthy Action plan is a timely blueprint for making New Zealand a healthier, more active country," said SPARC CE Nick Hill.

"SPARC's role is to focus on the physical activity components, but our work will be complemented by that of the other organisations, such as the Ministry of Health, the Heart Foundation, the Cancer Society and Diabetes NZ. By working together to tackle the issues of poor nutrition and inactivity, we will also reduce the incidence of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer."

SPARC has worked closely with the Ministry of Health on the development of the plan, which encompasses government, non-government organisations and private sector agencies.

Specific actions that will be SPARC-led include:

  • Leading the development of new physical activity policies and strategies
  • Developing regional physical activity plans
  • Supporting community initiatives that promote physical activity
  • Providing input into legislation and regulatory reviews where physical activity considerations are appropriate
  • Maintaining the effective Green Prescription health initiative
